I am trying to wipe clean and start fresh with these two old PC's I have at home. They are both running windows ME but but are messed up full of old unused files and probably a few viruses. Can anyone please give me detailed instructions on how to do this. I have never done this before so I have no clue. Also what will I need, I have the software that came with the PC's, Anything else I need?

Follow these directions for formatting your old harddrive from the CD-Rom. This will remove everything from the Harddrive giving you a clean disk to work from.

If you do not have a FULL INSTALL version of the operating system (in this case, Windows ME), but have only the UPGRADE EDITION... then you will not be able to install Windows again after a reformat unless you plan to spend almost $200 for the full install of XP. So, before you do anything, make sure your OS disk that came with the PC is a full install version.

Then, insert the disk into the drive and run it, following the instructions. After it preps the system, it should reboot and ask if you would like to format the hard drive. Say yes. If you feel that simply installing ME over top of the existing version without formatting will suffice, by all means go ahead.

This method may be different being that the recovery disks from the manufacturer could operate differently.

Lots of patience Gabby. Reinstalling that stuff isn't all that much fun, so I have to ask how old the pcs are and what you intend to do with them once you get them reloaded? Chances are they are 1Ghz or less with 20 gb. Not much you can do with those machines these days unless you limit to email. If I'm right you can't store much on them, so before you invest the time and frustration, think through what your objective is in doing this project.

PS. I was ever so happy to get rid of ME because my computer locked up constantly. anyway, if you decide to go ahead, good luck.
