During 1999 spring training with the Braves, Galarraga developed a sore back that did not respond to treatment from the trainers. He was referred to a medical oncologist at Atlanta, and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of lymphatic cancer. He missed the entire season while undergoing chemotherapy. Galarraga returned the next season, and on his third at-bat of the Opening Day in the 2000 season, Galarraga knocked in the winning run with a home run. At the end of the 2000 season, Galarraga became the first player in history to win two NL Comeback Player of the Year Awards (he had won the award previously in 1993).
In 2004, Galarraga's cancer relapsed, and he underwent two three-week periods of chemotherapy and was hospitalized for 23 days for additional treatment.
He eventually recovered and was offered a spring training invite by the New York Mets. Galarraga showed that he had some left in the tank offensively socking 3 home runs, but appeared very tentative on the defensive end. Galarraga retired during spring training with the Mets on March 29, 2005, saying it was "the right time to give a younger guy a chance to play." Galarraga was just one home run short of 400 career home runs.

probable someone thinks Galarraga has a danger, yet i do no longer. Kong? strong grief No. career OBP of .302 is heavily undesirable. besides, his danger ended long in the past -- he were given 3 votes on his first pollin 1992, decrease than a million%, and become executed. Kingman probable were given extra screwed than very almost all of us by technique of the collusion years, if he'd performed yet another 2-3 seasons he'd probable have poked alongside to 500+ homers, yet that does no longer have made him a extra effective participant, only a somewhat extra effective-searching one. at the same time as human beings make the (wrong) declare that McGwire become "one dimensional", they are really speaking about Kong.

I think he retired from the Anaheim Angels (his last year was 2004). He retired 1 home run short of 400 and I have no idea where he's at now, but I think he's coaching (maybe with the Braves???)
