I love this question. If you were in 9/11, Oklahoma's fed, building bombing or some other terrors attack, you can't even realize the devastation. And that's only a small part of what a solder goes through. Thank you for this question..* Nam Vet.

I know from what I've read. Also, the circumstances in many cities these days is very much war-like. It doesn't have to be government against government to have disastrous consequences.

No I don't have a clue. I have heard stories from my grandfather about WWII and they were horrifying. I have also heard stories from this war and they didn't effect me so much. I think that in the old days it was a more horrid and slower way to die because of the ape like weapons they had.
I can't go to war due to a heart condition. Nothing would give me more patriotism to be able to go and fight for Australia but I can't. I admire anyone who does. They are the heroes of this world. God Bless em all

I don't know what war is like from personal experience. But I have certainly had a glimpse of its effects on those who do know first-hand what it is like. My 84 year old step-dad sometimes still cries when he talks about his experiences in Germany and France during WWII. My dad, rest his soul, could never talk about his experiences in Japan during that same war - except one time when he quietly mentioned that he was among the first troops to enter Nagasaki after the bomb was dropped and he hoped to never see anything like that again.
I have a nephew who is finishing up his Marine training and he will be heading for Iraq within the next couple of months. It hurts so bad to see him go because I know he will be irrevocably changed from that experience. War really IS hell.

War is hell. The stench of the wounded, the twisted corpses, the fire, smoke, noise. But worse is the fear ... Well, maybe the blisters from the combat boots is worse. They hurt like hell. Anyway, you'd be surprised to discover the clues that Americans have concerning war. They just don't talk about it because it is mostly ineffable.
