Legitimate talent agents can ONLY take 10% commission of the money an actor makes from a performance. The Talent Agent CANNOT take more than a 10% commission. If you are NOT in New York, or, L.A., you will probably run into someone pretending to be an agent.

If you want to make sure the agent is legitimate, go to the Department of State website for the state where you live, contact them and ask if the Talent Agent is legitimate and what commission can an agent in your city/state charge an actor.

lets get one thing straight, here - AGENTS NEVER MAKE YOU PAY UPFRONT!!! But, of course, they're still making a living out of this business, so make sure you read every contract that you have to sign. The percentage of cash they take from your pay is usually no more than 15-20%. This is subject to the percentage of work they put into finding you jobs, but it's still usually a fixed figure.... You should be able to use your bilingual skils to your advantage, as not many English kids can say that they are fluent in more than their native language! Good for you! Hope that helped! x x x

Agents who demand you pay them money up front are running a scam. Legitimate agents are paid a percentage out of the work they net for you. If your agent is good and you work hard, a legitimate agent will be well paid without having to demand any out-of-pocket money from you.

Most of the answers given are correct, if not entirely clear. When you work, your negotiated fee is paid by the person/group who hired you to your agent. He/she takes whatever percentage the two of you have negotiated as fair (typically, 10%). You then get a check from your agent for the remaining amount.

DO NOT hire an agent who expects money upfront. The only time you should be expected to pay him/her is when you get money, and then it's only like 10%. But you should never have to pay when you're out of work.

Don't ever pay an acting agent anything up front. They make money when you make money by charging you a commission when you book work. They usually charge 10%.
Don't pay anything up front, they are just trying to rip you off.
