I'm especially interested in any answers making a case for the non-front runners like, say, Richardson or Hagel, etc.

It's to early to predict who any of the front runners would be at this point. But the most appealing ticket with the broadest appeal of untapped voters would be Obama for president, to appeal to African American voters, and Clinton for VP, to appeal to woman. I know this would only appeal to liberals of course.
