I was told that because I surf the web a lot, probably have a lot of viruses and that I need some virus scanning software. If this is true, which one should I get to speed things up?

Could be or not! depends on ur computer security, on how much level ur system is secured. First Relese all temporary files and folders from Internet Temporary Files, then do a spyware and malware scan by a good scanner. After that slow speed could be due to lots of waste entries in Registry, for it download Registry Cleaner and perform a clean. After this turn off valueless services and applications from loading in startup sequence. To do this go to Start>>Run>>type msconfig>>in Startup Tab>>remove unneccessary entries>>like Adobe Speed loader, Qtask(quick time tray icon)>>msnmsgr(windows messenger) and whatever u seems useless.
I am assuming u have at least 512MB RAM. After it go to desktop>>Right Click on My computer>>Properties>>Advanced >>Settings>>Advanced Tab>>Click Change>>Click on C: drive then select No Paging File>> Click Set>>After It Select the partiton which is blank or have most of Free Space, click on it>>SElect System Managed Size>> Click Set>>(Note: u can use multiple drives to store page files, the process is same)>>Ok>>Ok>>Restart Ur Computer.
For a good virus clean try Quick Heal Internet Security Suite.
That's It!
Good Bye!

NOD32....never ever ever use Mcafee, Norton, etc. Commercial anti virus software will only bring you more problems....don't listen to your friends that probably have Norton or anything else. Use what hackers use....NOD32

www.eset.com

Suck it up and buy the full version...it's worth it. Set it to scan everything and if you're an avid music downloader...it'll catch corrupt files before they finish downloading.

JUST DON'T TAKE IT TO THE GEEK SQUAD!!!!! unless you're married to one of them, they'll screw you and over charge you at the same time! Another thing, spyware and adware detectors ad to the problem too....get the software that is 1. REAL....and 2. Will get all of your computer illnesses deleted.

And for anyone else that is going to suggest more free downloads...just stop. A free download will only get you so far before it doesn't protect like the full version. Why do you think they have full versions!?!?

You don't have an emachine do you? If you do, throw it away!

I think there must have some regsitry errors and spyware in you PC to slow it down.
You need to try a registry cleaner to clean you PC.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer you create junk in the registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner. It is a powerful and useful tool to elinimate to the clutter and junk that builds up in your PC's registry from installing and removing programs, creating and deleting files and surfing online.Without regular system tune–ups, it's very likely your computer will slow, crash, full of error messages, leaving you with a costly computer–mechanic bill and lost data.
There are some comparison and review of registry cleaners

Oh you TOTALLY need an anti-virus if you're surfing and downloading from the net. You can get a free one like AVG. You also should download Superanti-spyware. You also need to clean out your cookie or temporary internet folders.

Try AdAware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5). I don't recommend Norton anti-virus to anyone with a computer with less than 512 MB of RAM--it will slow the comptuer down even more, even though it is supposed to work on comptuers with fewer than 512 MB RAM.
