Sorry to be such a downer, but of all of the places I visited in Europe, it was my least favorite. If you are going to get stoned in a coffee shop, you will like it. The beer is good adn the river tour is nice, but other than that it is just okay. I won't go back...there are sooooo many other wonderful places to go. Just being honest, really.

I have been to most Western European cities, and Amsterdam is on my top 10 list.
It's a very compact and easy city to get around. From the airport, there is a train that goes directly downtown in less than 20 minutes. The tram/bus system is great. If you like bicycling, it is very biker friendly with many places to rent from. Finally, a great walking city with alot of charm among the canals.

There's something for everyone. Museums: The Rembrandt museum, The Maritime Museum, The Van Gogh Museum,Rijksmuseum. Restaurants: Hugh variety of indoor and outdoor cafes. Coffee Shops: Coffee/Head shops each as their own unique themes. Nightlife: Quite a few clubs, including the famous "Milky-Wey" Of course, the red light district if you're into that.

Yes, Amsterdam is definately worth to visit! There are lots of things to do and to visit.

The city's beauty and cultural attractions alone drew over 7 million overnight stays in 2004. With its unique combination of old-world charm and cosmopolitan culture, Amsterdam is one of the most popular European cities for international visitors.

It's a heavy tourist destination. One can tell because you'll hear more English spoken then Dutch, so I'm not too crazy about it anymore. However some points are nice: The Rembrant museum, The Maritime Museum, The Van Gogh Museum, 2 sex museums (yes two of them), Canal trips, and much more.
It's worth it if you don't have to go over 4 hours out of your way to get there. If you do, check out Maastricht (the Netherlands), Utrecht (the Netherlands), Brugge (Belgium), and Cologne (Germany) while your at it.
