It is human nature to be competitive, like with my friend here we like to see who is the fastest, most accurate but nothing unsportly, i guess thats how you would put it. We dont put each other down, unless joking. I dont feel its important but its just the way we are.

It is because of the pecking order that society has.
most people want rewards now and dont really buy into 'the meek shall inherit the earth'
In most cases (sex not included) being on the bottom entitles a person to less comforts than being on the top.
In our society, people want good grades, high paying jobs etc.
They can only attain these things by being better than others.

This is done usually from parents of ugly kids to boost their self-esteem, so they grow up to be brats and think they are better than everybody else.
