Most answers are quite correct, you will run a rather high risk of cracking your windshield. They are made of two layers of glass seperated by a plastic film, if you dump hot water on the glass, you will heat the outer layer, and the uneven expansion will cause any defect in the glass to crack or shatter. Second, you will have to continue to pour water on the car in order to warm it enough that the water you just poured won't freeze immediately. But - hot water on a painted metal surface will not damage the paint.

i got a funny story about that one: i lived in minnesota for some time and was part owner of a farm there, some of my partners were californians. it gets cold in minnesota, (justabit chilly), and the windshields on the cars frosted up, and they would throw water on them to clear them, and this worked for a while...then we had a cold snap, and it got to around 20 below and the windows frosted hard, and i said just go out and start up the cars and let them warm up for a while so you can scrape the ice of the windows, and they said something to the effect that just because i was a hic from wyoming i didn't know everything they had been doing this for quite some time would i please be quiet, and one partner took a pan of boiling water off the stove to prove his point and tossed it on the windshield...and the windshield just dissappeared, he turned to grin at me and to say "see, works like a charm" when he realised that the windshield had imploded into the front seat of his car...i just smiled and said "hics from wyoming don't have to spent 500 dollars on new windshields because they are arrogant twits"

Try water a little bit hotter than room temp. When I'm snowed in or the exterior of my car is frozen I microwave 2 liters of water for 3 mins and dilute it with 1 liter of cold tap, and apply it to the layers of ice and gently hit it with the ice scraper. You can also buy a lighter plug powered heater/defroster for ice. Saw one at Walmart last month.

No it isn't. If your window is frosted over, or has ice on it and you pour hot water on it you could cause your window to crack or even shatter. I wouldn't recomend doing it. I would let my defroster melt it or maybe get some de-icer. I've good luck with both.

i could first enable one greater 10 minutes to defrost the motor vehicle via beginning the motor vehicle and turning the heating on and the rear windscreen heater on, then after approximately 5 minutes unfastened the caught wipers from the windscreen, as quickly as this has been performed i could then use my windscreen scraper to do away with the frost from the windscreen which could be softening up, do no longer try the washer as this could be frozen, very quickly you will see the frost on the windscreen disappearing, yet in no way ever use warm or chilly water on the windscreen for it might desire to crack the reveal and not basically that the water will freeze only as promptly making the activity of clearing the windscreen a astonishing purchase greater durable, having each and every of the living house windows sparkling from frost makes it lots greater straightforward to work out out of transforming into you a safer driving force, for how many situations have you ever seen a driving force peering out of slightly of cleared reveal attempting to work out their way on the same time as using no longer very risk-free for your self or the different highway shoppers, ok then take care and bear in techniques that the line situations would be icy besides socontinual careful with this in techniques, yet one greater reason to allow time beyond regulation earlier beginning of earlier using.

Try an ice scraper.
In the time it takes you to lug enough hot water outside to melt anything, you could have scraped off most of the ice and warmed up your engine.
