I have played both. The trumpet is harder work for breathing, but it has been my experience that it is somewhat easier to start as a beginner. The flute is a light, beautiful, often categorized as feminine instrument. The case is also a heck of a lot easier to carry, heh. The trumpet is a louder, stronger instrument, with few fingerings. It's up to your breath control to change pitches, this can be tricky. I think the Flute is a prettier sound, and the trumpet is a powerful sound. I personally prefer the flute. The flute is known to be an instrument for which crazy fast runs are often written. As a flute player in a symphonic band or orchestra, you'll have lots of runs and trills and really high notes way above the leger. The trumpet section more often carries the melody. It is of course ultimately a matter of preference which instument is "better." Any instrument can be wonderful when played by a true professional.

Flute is easier to play for long periods of time; eventually a trumpet player's lips go numb and then there's no more playing for the day. If you're going to be in a marching band, a flute is a pain because there's nowhere to attach one of those little music holders (lyre) because the flute is out to the side. Trumpets are straight ahead--easy to attach a lyre.

flute is soooooooo much better!!! flute has a wide range and can go up so much higher than trumpet. Its easier to learn at first but has some awesome techic stuff you can get into in your advanced stages! flute will always win over trumpet no matter what!

Though I played trumpet...I always wanted to play the flute. Both have their merits, but if I had to do it all over again I'd play the flute, but that's just me.

Trumpet all the way. I play the trumpet and the sound of it over powers most instruments even by itself.

It shouldn't be a question as to which is better than the other. They both have their own unique role in band and orchestra.
