let the number of hours worked for 6 hours be x. therefore, total number of shifts worked =6x.
since, jan worked four times as many as 6 hours . the total 8 hour shifts are going to be [4x]8 = 32 x
therefore, total work done =38 h
therefore 32x + 6x = 38
38x = 38
x=1

therefore, shifts worked in 8 hours = 4x
=4(1)
= 4 shifts of 8 hours

Here is what you know
Her hours were 38
Her 8-hour shifts were 4 times the 6-hour shifts

we can set up a couple of columns as follows in Excel
8Hr-6Hr=Total Hours
4-1=38
8-2=76

Since we know that the 8 hour shifts are 4 times as many as the 6-hour we can multiply 1 * 8 and add 4 * 6 for the first row
That, of course, is the answer, but I showed the next possibility and it is too high.

ok so my brain hurts..

4 times more 8 hours (4 times 8 is 32)

so she worked 4 8 hour shift and 1 6 hour shift..

it is the only answer - becuase any more shifts of 8 and it goes overs the 38 hours
