Animals have less control over their fate than do humans. It's about mercy. We feel mercy for the helpless.

The brainwashing we are exposed to from the media everyday, I'm all for helping animals and preventing unneccesary cruelty or death, but not at the expense of human lives. I remember the case of the woman jogger killed by a mountain lion (cats chase things that run, it's what they do whether or not they like the taste), they raised over $5,000 for her kids trust fund, and people donated over $20,000 for the fund to look after the cubs in the San Diego(?) zoo. We are told it's human fault for infringing on "their" enviroment, as if people came here from Mars or something. You can exercise as much caution as possible, but wild animals are proving quite adaptable to living in suburbs, and anyplace they cease to fear people because they are not hunted by humans, they don't fear humans, and people will continue to be attacked and killed by wild predators. I accept bears, wolves or mountain lions out in the wilderness, parks, etc. but in my own dooryard they are defintely on the "endangered" list. And I'd like to let all these dangerous animals loose in the cities where the tree huggers all live , to roam free outside their doors, so they know what it's like to need a good flashlight and a rifle handy when you go outside at night, and not be able to leave pets, livestock or children unsupervised day or night. That's provided the bears don't let themselves in, locks and window glass just slows them down. We are part of the natural food chain, and every now and then some nature lover finds out just how well nature loves them.

I don't think animals garner more care than humans do-it's just that it's easier to lavish affection on animals, as humans often have serious issues concerning vulnerablility and risk of rejection. A pet's love is unconditional.

That reminds me of a joke. A northern lawyer was discussing a case with a texas lawyer they weer at the texan's ranch barbecuing in the backyard. The northern lawyer said you can get sentenced to more time for killing one of those cows(pointing to a herd of cattle in a pasture) than for killing a man here in texas. The texan slowly looks over at him and says"Do you see any of those cows that need killing?"

Animals do everything by instinct or nature, if you will. Humans have a higher intelligence and are more responsible of their actions. I doubt you will see a dog or a cat kill another animal because they like it's collar.

I think the main reason is because animals don't judge you, they don't insult you or are mean to you. They love you no matter what as long as you love and take care of them. But it's the complete opposite for humans. They judge you, berate you, and insult you. So I think that's one reason why people care for animals more.

Kids and animals rate the same to me... they're both innocent and need to be cared for. Adults, on the other hand, are fair game... they ought to know better.
