Most companies are looking for an OS that is not only easy to use for the users, but also easy for them to support. Microsoft Operating Systems tend to be more intuitive for beginners and have paid support available through Microsoft. Also, most application standards are already in Windows based applications. A company that departs from these runs the risk of compatibility issues or even issues in the availability of desired application features. So regardless of how much more stable or secure a different option may be, these are difficult advantages for any other OS to overcome in the business world.

The bottom line when it comes to businesses is money. Linux is free (and it is not hard to find as was mentioned above--type in Linux distribution and you will get lots of hits) but it takes a lot of set up and upkeep time, which means paying someone with the knowledge money continually. Microsoft OS's are expensive but have lots of support and are relatively easy to maintain. That is what the businesses see.
Not surprisingly, more and more smaller businesses seem to be using Linux as it is free--less start up costs.

YMMV (Your Mileage might Very). Apple - Mac OSX that's - is provided on a linux platform. for my area I desire apple - i take advantage of it at artwork and function a mac mini at living house (which I truthfully have only placed plex on and could hook to my mattress room television). In saying that i'm on a living house windows Pee-Cee on the minute, especially cos i won't be able to be afflicted to shove Ubuntu Linux on it. you will get enthusiasts on all aspects of the fence - and the three working structures exceedingly lots do the comparable component besides. it is going to likely be difficult for the two apple or linux to get the industry share that MS has however. the subsequent technology (or lots greater possibly - the technology after that) will in all probability be some variety of linux (google) platform on a gadget that hasn't been invented yet (television/pc/internet thingy). So I agree, linux is the destiny - even though it wont be in its contemporary guise. a third party (google/apple) will could equipment it. that's only the way the international works. Oh and while you're conversing approximately Linux - Ubuntu and Debian are the superb - something - pfffft ;)

Windows, being the most popular operating system, has licensed folks to develop software for it, therefor there are endless applications for windows.
I was getting into computers in 1980 and got to the point I was writing programs for dos. I got the geek magazines and such and saw the trend, and read the stories.
This is why Apple isn't the most popular type pc. They wouldn't license folks to develop software, but the other guy did. With many choices of software, everyone flocked to them. That's what kept apple on a smaller scale. Apple people swear by their OS. I'll never own one though...I like the challenge of Microsoft software! LOL I like banging my head on rocks too. Actually, Xp comparatively is the shizzle. 3.1 wasa cute. 98 sucked big time, ME was like oatmeal in meatloaf, XP took over all control and setup of hardware, drivers and such.

The main reasons why people go Windows than linux are:
a. Windows is more user friendly than linux
b. Windows is a graphical user inerface which makes it easy for even a novice user to use it
c. In a country like India if a product is of high cost then people think it as low in quality, this trend starts from clothes to computers. That is why people think the open source / freely available linux is less useful than high cost windows.

because if everyone is using the same OS, it's just easier and the most popular choice. people worry about compability and don't want to use a free OS. they also may want a level of support and may doubt linux.
clients are also a factor as to what software a company may purchase. at least at the law firm i work in.

Well for the simple fact most business applications are written for windows. When 90% of computers are windows based you go where the business is.
Plus the majority of people are trained on windows and not on Linux!

Linux is open source, and support is not as consistent as Microsoft, who is able to pay support staff because it charges for its product. Support is critical on an enterprise level.

It is harder to get fired for recommending MS, than it is recommending Linux. Sort of like the way everyone used to purchase IBM computers or risk getting fired.
