The black screen is the Basic Input/Output System setup screen. Hence BIOS. Choose f1, then you will go to more screens that allow you to tell the machine about the devices it has installed and set some options. Like the poster above says, best thing is to find a friend that knows about this stuff but if that is not an option just pick 'Load Setup Defaults' from the options list (unless the machine is ancient it will have this option), then on the basic setup page locate the item for "Floppy Drive and select 'None'. Also check the date and time are right. THEN press whatever key it offers to SAVE and EXIT and you should be fine. The reason it stops when booting is because it is telling you it thinks it OUGHT to have a floppy drive because the BIOS is set to look for one ... but it ain't there and you need to tell the BIOS you are cool with that.... put simply DON"T meddle with settings you don't recognise ... keep it simple and you will be fine. Have fun. Spud.

Sounds like you have a bios problem. Bios is the software on your motherboard that tells the computer what to do when you first turn it on. There are several options in the bios, one of which is on the very first menu twords the bottom. The option will be "Halt on:" and there are a few options that you can choose from. By default it is set to "all but keyboard", you can change this to "all but keyboard/disk". This will allow your computer to boot normally. By pressing the F1 button, that takes you into the bios setup. If you had the manual for the computer motherboard, it would make finding and changing the setting much easier. But most motherboards I have seen have this option listed in the very first menu item when you go into bios.
Start your computer normally, and press F1 when prompted to. The first item after you press F1 should be "standard cmos features" or something like that. Press enter when this item is highlighted to go into changing the settings. Then use the up/down arrows to move down to the setting "Halt on". Usually you can use the plus and minus keys by your number keys on your keyboard to change the settings. Press the plus key unitll the setting changes from "all but keyboard" to "all but keyboard/disk" and press enter. Then press the escape key, and then press F10 to save and exit, Then press the Y key and press enter. Your computer should reboot and start normally.

The problem is that the BIOS is looking for a floppy drive when one doesn't exist. Since one doesn't exist, it halts on that error. Since you obviously don't know much about computers, I don't recommend going into the BIOS and telling it not to look for the floppy drive. You can SERIOUSLY mess up your computer. Not beyond repair... but mess it up enough that it won't work until someone else fixes it. That's the problem though. If I was you, I would just deal with it.

There is a free online computer help site that is open 24/7 that will probably be able to help you. The response is usually instant because they use a "live chat" system. I have listed the source for you to check out.

You say, "it hasn't done this until i got the internet hooked up". You may have picked up a virus. You should consider using a firewall, such as Sygate Personal Firewall, and an Anti-Virus Program and also a Spyware Program, such as Spybot Search & Destroy.

You have to go into the bios and disable the floppy drive it thinks you have. I'm not sure why it started to try to read one but it has. If you are not familiar with the bios you should have somebody who is take care of it.

It sounds like it can't load windows, look in setup and see what boot order you have. If it's the hard drive then change it to hard drive and save the changes.
