To compare the fractions change them into common denominators. Change them into
24.
5/8=15/24
5/6=20/24
As you can see, 5/6 is bigger than 5/8.

Associate the fraction with something that you can identify with. Forget the number crunching. For the last 20 years teachers have been obsessed with fancy formulas, short cuts and impressing their students.
You say that you know basic fraction like 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4; why is that? You can transfer that comfort to any fraction.

In order to compare fractions all of the denominators (bottom numbers) have to be the same. To make these two fractions the same we need to multiply the denominators together. Why is that? Because we know that if we multiply 8 X 6 that both 8 and 6 are multiplied equally. ex: 8 X 6 = 48, 48/8=6 and 48/6=8. Halfway there. Both denominators are the same so we can "fix" the numerator now. Since we multiplied the 8 by 6 we must multiply its numerator (top number) by the same or else the number will change its value. So 5 X 6 = 30, therefore 5/8 is also 30/48. All we did was increase both the top and bottom by the same amount. Now for 5/6. Remember that we multiplied 6 X 8 to get 48 so now we will multiply the 5 by 8 in order to keep the fraction the same. That gives us 5 X 8 = 40, we know the bottom is 48 so the fraction is now 40/48. This is the same value as 5/6 we just multiplied the top and bottom by 8. Now we can compare the two fractions. 5/8=30/48 and 5/6=40/48. Which is the higher value? They both have the same number on the bottom, that is the same amount of "sections" so all we have to do is look at the top; 40 is a higher value than 30 so the fraction with 40 in the top is the highest value since 40 is greater than 30. We could also tell how much greater. 40/48-30/48=10/48. This is a large number so we can "shrink" it down the same way we made the numbers higher. 2 will divide into both the top and bottom equally so 10/2=5 and 48/2=24. The answer is that 5/6 > (is greater) than 5/8 by 5/24.

You could have used 24 for the denominator but only if you could look at it and know. What if the fractions where 2/19 and 3/14.

By multiplying the denominators togather you will get a "common" denominator to work with. As you become more used to fractions you can begin to take shortcuts.

Try to understand what is happening, not just shortcuts or "do this then this". That is the secret to learning math.

The easiest way to see which is larger is to find the common denominator for both fractions.

That means find a number that both the 8 and the 6 goes into evenly.

You will see that 24 and 48 both work, but 24 is smaller and therefore is called the LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR and we should use that.

Now you convert both fractions to a new fraction that has 24 as the denominator. You do that by dividing the original denominator into the new denominator and multiplying by the number on top.

so 8 into 24 is 3 times 5 is 15.
and 6 into 24 is 4 times 5 is 20.

Now you put those two numbers over the new common denominator.

15/24 (the original 5/8)
20/24 (the original 5/6)

And the question is... which is larger... and the answer is 20/24 (20 is larger than 15) so originally that was the 5/6.

The answer is 5/6 is larger than 5/8

5 / 6 , all the others have explained it, remove the LCM of the denominators, = 24, so u get15 / 24 for 5 / 8 and 20 / 24 for 5 / 6, 20 is greater so 5 / 6 fraction is greater

5/6 is bigger. Think of it this way.

Suppose you have a pizza. You divide the pizza into 6 pieces. On another pizza, you divide it into 8 pieces. The pizza with the 8 pieces obviously has smaller slices. So, 5 small slices or 5 big slices? 5/6 > 5/8

It's 5/6. Try to draw 2 pies, divide one pie into 6 and the other by 8 then shade 5 parts of each pie. It's so much easier to do it that way.

in order to figure this out, we have to first find the greatest common factor.

5/8 = 10/16 = 15/24
5/6 = 10/12 = 15/18 = 20/24

24 is the greatest common factor, and as you can see up there, 5/6 is the greater number.

Yes, 5/6 for 5 portions of 6 are bigger than 5 portions of 8 pieces.
