My Grandma an Grandpa raised me and my sister. I always wondered why my Grandmother had a very large bed and lovely furniture in her large room and my grandpa had a single bed in a tiny room next door to mine.. I was a curious child like most and asked my grandma one day why they slept in not only different beds but completely different room? She told me it was because my grandpa snores!!! I think that when he was feeling granny he would sneak into her luxurious bed and get it on with her!! Ewe sick thought but anyhow I do think that some married couples in the 50's slept in separate beds, probably not separate rooms like my strange grandparents.

No that was just on TV. Back then it wasn't the done thing to show married couples in the same bed on TV, it was thought indecent at the time and inapprioate behaviour at the time to show this as children were watching and these shows were family shows..
I think the Brady Bunch were the first TV show to actually show a couple in bed together, before that if the couple did sit or lay on the bed then they had to have one foot on the floor.

That was what was considered acceptable to be shown on TV back then, people have been snuggling in bed together since the caveman. When couple get older though some find it more comfortable to sleep in separate beds or even separate rooms but that is usually because of medical conditions.

It was the rule on TV.
However, it was not at all unusual for middle-aged couples to have separate beds, and often separate rooms in the 40's and 50's. It was more common among the relatively affluent, probably because they were freer to develop separate interests, not to mention having the space to do so. However, it was almost always attributed to one party's snoring.
At the other end of the spectrum, in NYC at least, it was not at all extraordinary for a blue collar family of 5 to live in a 1 bedroom apartment.

It was on TV. They were prissy about what was shown. If a couple was on a bed, one foot of each had to touch the floor at all times.
Remember, Star Trek was done in the late 60s and they caused an absolute tizzy by having Willian Shatner and Nichelle Nichols kiss. Interracial kissing? Perish the thought.
They had all kinds of weird ideas back then. Makes you wonder what our descendants will consider weird when watching those Old Shows from 2007. "Hey, back in 2007 in those 2-dimensional episodes of the OC...no frontal nudity! Why is that?"

Just tv because the censors were more prudish then
Kudos to Chooky..The Brady Bunch was indeed the 1st sitcom to show a married couple in the same bed and All in the Family was the 1st to ever mention a toilet *let alone have one flush..you never saw it..just heard it*

Some older couples do now but I think why they did that on the shows back then were because of censorship.Lucy was the first pregnant women ever shown on tv also.

Yes, it is true! I remember my parents sleeping in twin beds back in the fifties. What about the 40's?
