What has worked for me is the belief that "I can't chose my parents nor my boss: they are already there!". So the choices are - I work around, or work elsewhere, and never "Work Against"!
So, until you land a new job, make a small personal project of identifying the personal "good" points of the boss, and work to strengthen your relationship in those areas! Believe me, there is no one 100% bad or 100% good.
Even in the devil you mentioned here, you will find at least traces of angel!
In the process of this exercise, you stand to gain in many ways.
(a) Your energy is focused on positive things, so your on going job search is not affected.
(b) You may end up "discovering" a new facet of the devil, which may work to your advantage.
(c) You become experienced in dealing with difficult people, which in the long run will make you a successful employee.
(d) You will learn to become a better employee, a good boss, and above all a better human being!
Remember please: "This too shall pass"!!

Do you have any idea what makes him or her so evil?
That might be a good place to start. If you know what it is that makes him tick you can find out why he is soo evil and maybe even (if you feel so inclined) offer him/her some help.
Maybe his mother just died or his wife left.
If you find this not to be the case, document all of the evil things that he does.
if you are working in a hostile enviornment, you might be able to quit and collect unemployment while you search.
Also, in a non threatening manner, try to determine if this is just your opinion or do other people share it.
This will help you in formulating a plan regarding how you are going to deal with this person.
whatever you do, keep it professional.
Do not try to make a friend out of this person, as they could use that against you!

Okay you'll need a priest, some white candles, some holy water, and a good sized cross....jk. Seriously though you need a new job, but it is hard. Just stay where you are at, until you can't stand it anymore, and quit in the heat of the moment. But until you can find a good job, you are stuck there. Sorry to say.

There are any number of great advice books on the subject, including HOW TO WORK FOR A JERK. Stop by your local bookstore and take a look for it and some other similar titles (they're probably in the Careers section).

Can you transfer to another department or store? I would also suggest talking to someone in Human Resources. They will be able to tell you how to handle the boss. I have an awful boss too. I try and interact with her as little as possible. I just come in and absorb myself in my work, and it helps some.

Steps? Big ones, right on his tail.
I'll tell you what, for reals, kill him with kindness. Don't be condescending, smart alecky, passive-aggressive or anything that will irritate him. Be polite, kind, helpful, and fair. It'll make him crazy. Then wipe the dust off your feet when you quit for your new job.

Go to work early before anyone gets there. Drop your sweaty sack into their coffee cup each morning before work.
It's terrific fun and theraputic too! You'll start to look forward to going to work!
