So in the morning I can check to see if I'm listed.
If I'm not listed, then I know it's a good day!

The answer's pretty obvious if you think about it.
1) Death's a pretty important part of life.
2) The dead don't read the obits, the obits are for the living to remember and pay tribute to the dead.
3) You would rather see the obits in the sports section?

obituaries are death reports which are placed in the living section of the paper because it is the living that is saying farwell. after all you dont advertise a farwell event to the dead because you never get more than 1 at a time to attend.

Maybe to show respect to HOW the person lived? It goes beyond just telling them about a death and if that is all people cared about who would care who lived or died?
