It depends. I did a paper on it a while ago. It mostly happens in African tribes/cultures when a girl reaches puberty or about 11 yrs of age. There are two kinds of fgm and one is more serious than the other. One is where they remove the clitoris in order to deter any sexual activity before the girl is married. It's suppose to decrease the sensual senses down there so that as she grows up the girl is not tempted to have sex before marriage which would make her unmarriageable in her tribe/culture. The other type is where they remove not only the clitoris but also some of the internal sex organs and in some cases they sew up the vagina and leave only a small opening for menstrual flow. this one is more brutal than the first one and can lead to very serious health problems. So it depends on what kind they do. I think they-government/some of the people are trying to have the more brutal form banished or outlawed.

Female Genital Mutilation is tradition in some African tribal traditions which basically is meant to ensure a woman's purity for marriage. By cutting off the clitoris and labia, and sewing it into up to a hole that only urine and menses can pass through, at marriage her husband will slice the opening with a knife and run around with the bloody knife to show he's "been" with his new bride. Sexual intercourse will always be a horror for the woman, this way the woman would never be unfaithful

fmg is also practiced in some middle eastern countries and while to a outsider it may seem like the women are trying to keep this going ,people should know it is fear of 1 going against men (fathers and husbands) and 2 their daughters not being able to find husbands, which equal food shelter and protection against life as a prostitute ( which is what the mothers fear will happen when their un-marriageable girls are put out ) so it really of course comes back to the men

As mentioned above there are all kinds of mutilations performed on these little girls, depending on the tribe.
Curiously, it's the older women, not the men, who are fighting to uphold this barbaric torture tradition.
I'm posting, however, just to recommend to anybody the autobiography of the model Warris Dirie: Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey Of A Desert Nomad. My favorite superhero.
She describes it all very well, and made it her life to fight against it. Also she has the most amazing fight to freedom-story I've come across.

FGM, I think that is the ritual that they practice in certain african tribes were when a female reaches puberty they remove the clitoris so that when they are married they won't feel anything when they give themselves to their husband they did it to that model from africa you know the dark skinned one with really really short hair. They do it because they think it cuts down on infedility

some of these people are right, some are wrong.
FGM does invlove removing the outer and inner labia, including the clitoral hood.It can also be done by otherwise mulitalating or burning the clit. When people do this they believe it will discourage infidelity, as the sex causes no pleasure.
Unfortunatly it is very common, but not often talked about. i believe it is also called female circumsicion.

FGM is when you scar your private part permenantly for depression reasons. They (women) cut off their clitoris or damage anything else.
