It's a choice just like any other. Even with no skills, they could get a job as a fry cook at McDonald's or answering phones at a call center or any number of low tech jobs. But they don't. Why? Because prostitution is a lot of money for little effort. 200 bucks an hour looks pretty good next to minimum wage.
Don't buy that "victims abused as children" tripe; it's the lure of easy money. They can stop at any time.

I've seen a lot of stories on tv about how girls turned to prostitution because they were physically abused as children, because they were overpowered in some way as children. Others come from families who don't care about them, still others have never had parents around to tell them right from wrong, still others have run out of luck are on the street and need income to survive, but still, others see their only way to pay for college is by prostituting....so no, I don't think they are all victims, I think for some it's a chosen lifestyle. People do what they do because they get something out of doing it. Could be they are adicted to the lifestyle (which is mostly mafia and low life and not caring about anything, and drug related). Some like it, some have started into it and got stuck with no way out.

Prostitution Paradigm
Victims - In the European tradition, men have tried to keep women from working for money except as prostitutes. The most protected woman was married, yet a prisoner in her own home, except that it was not hers any more than the cage belongs to the bird. The prostitute was the public woman - publicly owned - the wife - privately owned. In the work place her money is about supplementing her partners income - he is first she is second. Although things have changed dramatically over the course of history I still see a lot of women giving up their independence and dignity because of a patriarchal society.

I think it depends on the place they live in. Women in third-world countries really often become victims, and first of all of human trades. However, not necessarily some criminal acts. Living in poor lands, seeing alcoholism, drug addiction, killing etc really makes women victims... of their stupidness. They start to believe any life is better than this. In general, ~3 billion women=~3 oppinions. Some may simply enjoy it:)

From what I have learned about prostitutes in the US, they have few options, little to no work experience/skills, and often have a(n) addiction problem/s to get them through, day to day. Many young girls who become hookers, are runaway teens and do not have an education and do this to survive. I see them as victims.
In Holland, where it is a legal profession, they are protected by the police, and some who have been interviewed say they have chosen this line of work because it pays well.

Most prostitutes do not enjoy their work. Most do not have a chose in the matter, it is sad that they can just sell their bodies like that. Most prostitutes were abused in some way as a child usually sexually so they think what they are doing is ok.

In my opinion, most are a victim of circumstance. alot of them have a drug habbit they need to feed. The quickest way to get money in thier eyes is prostitution. It's been around forever. I think it's a survival mechanism. These woman have had hard lives and need to survive any way they can.

I was 13 when my father put me down on skid row to ply my wares. I was just a toy for mens pleasures. I did not enjoy it, it scared me so very much. At the end of the night, I'd have to give him all the money for the family. He called it pulling my own weight in the family.

Do most of us enjoy our jobs? Do nurses enjoy cleaning the soiled linens of their patients? Do dishwashers relish the sloppy leftovers they scrape off of plates? Sex work is WORK, people.
As for "choice"--- if there were no demand for sex workers, there would be no sex work. What does it say about our values as a society when a woman can make more money selling her body that teaching our children?
