As I understand your question, you are asking that if 2a is a denominator and b is a denominator, how do you find the common denominator.

The answer is you multiply the two. So that would be (2a) * (b)
or
2ab

This will not always provide the LEAST common denominator, but in all circumstances you can multiply them to find A common denominator.

If you have 1/2 and 1/3, all you have to do is multiply the two denominators to find the commmon one: 6. Same logic in your case- the answer would be 2ab.

the common denominator is a number with all the other numbers as factors. the factors here are 2, a and b. to find the common denominator you would just find their product, which is 2ab.
