It's really sad, isn't it? I guess it's because our society devalues them because they aren't considered "contributing members of society" because our narrow views only use that term to describe citizens who are contributing monetarily. I've worked with adults with disabilities for about 12 years and I see the exact same thing. And I have a mental illness myself and have experienced this prejudice from more than a few healthcare workers firsthand.
When are we going to learn that a person can touch and improve lives in so many different ways aside from perpetuating wealth?

The staff of homeless shelters have seen their share of children, animals, and jailbirds. If they can no longer see a difference between who is, and who isn't, then they should probably find something else to do. Being homeless for most people is the most humiliating, degrading experience they will ever have. In most cases, the staff can appreciate this and have compassion and empathy. But, they are people too, and they get abused, ridiculed, harassed, and berated by the very people they are helping. It can take it's toll, I assure you.

Have you ever been to a homeless shelter?? I'm sure there are people like you describe, but that is far from the norm. Most people who work/volunteer at shelters are there because they truly care and want to help.

Becasue they assume that homeless people are either stupid, insane or criminals. Even though they worl closely with them they still hold the same prejudices that most of society has about the homeless. While there are a few that do fal into those descriptions, most are simply people that have either had a run of bad luck or that have simply lost at life.

I have volunteered in shelters before, and have friends who live on the street (I help as many as I can, but I'm not independantly wealthy myself), however I have never seen the situation you have described...
If anything, the volunteers I have met understand that sometimes life just sucks, and hang out with their homeless friends and chat while they serve meals, assign chores, etc.

Which have you been: a homeless shelter worker, or homeless?
Ever meet a homless person? They're not all there (although I'm one to talk).

Not all do, this is a broad based assumption that you are making. Some treat people with compassion and respect.
