Depends totally on the man...like the suit and tie or ascot, it is the total package not just one piece. If it fits the personality of the man and is the right size for his face...narrow or wide, and color suits him..then by all means it is not nerdy or goofy. Just look at Pierce Brosnon...James Bond..to see if a man looks like a nerd in a bow tie. Develop your "personal style" and don't worry if the slow and dim ladies don't think that it is classy or sexy. We all need waitresses and maids dear! As my Grandmother would say..don't cultivate relationships with the dead common.
Now I know that sounds harsh, but it seems the men who ask questions of manners and style get slammed by nasty women, who are far to young to be answering such questions in the first place. I feel for these men....they are trying! which is what most of these gals are complaining all the time about. I encourage you to not to be bullied away from something that has caught your eye or interests you...besides the lady you are trying to catch the eye of will appreciate you for you ultimately...dressed to the nines or not...she should always be proud of you! If she is not...lose her in traffic at your first opportunity. Wishing you the Best!

I think that my man can look very sexy in a bow tie but he has to have the right suit on to match other wise he looks like some kind of penguin waiter boy lol.

Maybe it's just me, but a nerdy guy wearing a bowtie with confidence and a smile is somebody I'd like to know. They are generally independent thinkers, with broad interests, open-minded, and have a wonderful sense of humor. These traits are what makes a guy sexy to me.
Perhaps it was my Grandfather who helped me realize this. He wore bowties and bolo ties as much as traditional neckwear.

I'm not usually a big fan but I did think Rob Lowe on The West Wing looked hot in a tux and bow tie.

I think its cute when guys where them because its not the usually tie.
