I need ONE word that means an effect of something AND implies that this effect is negative.
I'm pretty sure there's a word for this. It's just escaping me at the moment.
Please help me by being my thesaurus!

so far the answers I've gotten aren't good enough. words like harm, detriment, etc are negative, but they are not necessarily *effects* of something else. i need a word that is both negative AND an effect of something

consequence and repercussion do not necessarily imply negativity. I looked them up in the dictionary and there is nothing in the definition that says that a consequence or repercussion are always negative. Same, I think, for ramification. "downside" is the best answer yet, but it sounds a little too colloquial. i was hoping for something more academic-sounding.

Someone already said it, but you dismissed it. Consequence and repercussion are the best two options.

From a thesaurus search of those words, I found: Backlash, Fallout, Reverberate and Aftermath.

Look at dictionary.com and you can find definitions and click on an option to see the thesaurus.

pessimism? pessimistic? i was thinkin of a word because a woman i was talking to implied something i thought of doing would "never work" & i could not think of what the word was that defined her attitude but it was something referring to a "negative effect" through her statement, & it popped in my head that she was being pessimistic, while googling "word for negative effect" hope this helps this 8-year old puzzle

consequence?

I'm pretty sure the word you want is consequence... "con" is negative and "sequence" is a series of events... so logically consequence would equal a negative reaction to a sequence of events... at least that's what I think... that's my rationale
