I don't know what it is, and I can't even find the source! I'm wondering if it could be a dead mouse in the wall, but I'm not sure what that smells like. This smells like rotten garbage. I've literally sniffed all over my living room on hands and knees and can't smell the smell near anything or anywhere in particular. When I'm near the fireplace, it seems like it could possibly be coming from there, but I'm not sure (maybe an animal died up in the chimney somewhere?). Anyway, my question is, what's the best way to get rid of a bad unidentifiable smell? The timing on this really sucks; I'm moving out of this apartment in a week and keep thinking I won't get my security deposit back because of the smell. Help!

A dead animal can certainly cause an unidentifiable horrible smell in your house (if you haven't had it before). If it is a dead mouse or other animal, then it is your landlord's problem--not yours. So, if you honestly did not cause it, then be honest with your landlord. (It's his responsibility to keep your home pest-free.) And nothing is going to make that smell go away if it's a dead animal in your wall or subfloor, except for removing the animal or letting time pass. You could try masking it with scented candles, febreeze, leaving your windows open, etc.

Michael G.....has your answer..I use bleach about 2 times a week very mild mix of bleach & water..I soak my feet in a small plastic wash tub just big enough to get both feet in.maybe a few mins...while sitting on the side of the bath room tub, rinse and wash with soap and rinse again.I never wear the same pair of shoes two or more days in a row, they need time to dry, I also use an anti perspirant deodorent on the bottom of my feet, this helps keep your feet from sweating allot, dancers use it, this is where I got the idea, and it works, keep your socks in the wash room,,,as far as the smell in your home Try Arm & Hammer Pet Oder Eliminator for your carpets, it works great, hope this helped along with Michael G advise...PS ,,dont use to much bleach, you will konw if you do !!!! and if you can leave your shoes outside to air out

try smelling in your garbage disposal. Sometimes that can get pretty nasty smelling. If this is the culprit then the local grocer has cleasers you can use to get rid of that odor.
