In base 8, instead of 1s, 10s, 100s, etc positions, you have 1s, 8s, 64s, etc.

765 in base 10.

1 = 8^0
8 = 8^1
64 = 8^2
512 = 8^3

765/512 = 1 (and change)
765 - 512 = 253
253/64 = 3 (and change)
253 - 192 = 61
61/8 = 7 (and change)
61 - 56 = 5
5/1 = 5

So 765(base10) = 1375(base8).

Hope that helps.
