This used to be the most fertile land in the world, what happened?

The Earth's deserts occur in the middle latitudes, and at the polar regions. Mesopotamia is in the middle latitudes. The reason it is the "most fertile land in the world" is due to the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Egypt is fertile land in the middle of the Sahara Desert along the Nile River. Go figure it.

It has to do with the ancient Babylonians over irrigating the land. All the water evaporated leaving the salts making it extremely difficult to grow anything

plate tectonics! Many areas of our world, such as the Sahara and Mongolia, used to be lush forests and tropical areas. But the continents moved to different latitude/longtitudes with different climates and weather patterns.
