I just had a baby 2 months ago so I've read all about this. Yes, they can see color, however not the way you & I see it. They sort of just see "shades" of it which is why very high contrasting colors, such as black, white & red are recommended for newborns for stimulation. As I understand it, they will begin to see all color ranges at about 3 months, however they will still get most intellectual stimulation from high contrasting colors until about 6-9 months of age.
As for distance, upon birth most babies can see somewhat clearly up to about 12" from their face. At about one month, they can see a few feet and by 5 months they see pretty much everything clearly.

Their focal distance (on average) is the distance between the head when breast feeding and the mother's face when she looks down. Focus is difficult as their eyes need to adjust to all the light in this enviroment. As for colours, the eyes are fully developed and should work normally but just not well. Compare an average person running to a world class athlete. Can do basically the same thing, but just not well. Its kind of like a babies vision compare to an adult.

Yes, I believe that newborns do see in color, but since their brains are not fully developed yet, they cannot remember anything until around the age of 4 or 5.

I just read somewhere that newborns see mainly in black and white, and they're coming out with black and white mobiles/toys as a result. They can only see about 12 inches in front of their face, and yes, I think it is relatively clear.

They see only a contrast in colors...such as black and white. They see a face that is very up close to theirs, but it is still blurry. Some mobiles and nursery decs are black and white so that newborns will be interested.

They can only see a couple of inches away from their face. They don't really see your face until they are several weeks old. Around 5 months I believe, they can see as an adult would.

not sure what colors they see. they do not have clear vision. you have to be pretty much in their face for them to see you. that's why they are born with such a great sense of smell. babies know their mother because of the smell of breast milk on their body, clothes, anything. they also know the sound of your voice from other people.

The doctors say that they can't see clearly, but who knows. Personally, I disagree. I think they should be able to see colors, I don't think that they are color blind.
