There was another question like this that received a number of interesting topics. Here's what I wrote and the link to the original question.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmeH88hWOpaHXYuCJBa032_sy6IX?qid=20070123181038AAiZyrv&show=7#profile-info-AA10163731
You could do this on a lot of different topics depending on what your interests are. You just need to find something you're passionate or opinionated about. Here are some ideas:
- War (could be any of them but obviously the hot topic is the war in Iraq
- Illegal immigration
- Child pornography or art re: the new Dakota Fanning movie "Houndog"
- Hillary for president...should a woman run/win?
- Water rights...should S CA be able to divert water from N CA?
- Global warming - trend or greenhouse gasses?
- Fur or faux? Should people wear animal products and do those against it have the right to throw blood on those who wear fur?
- Supermodels & anorexia...Should models be accountable for the body image of today's youth?
- Gas consumption...should we be using alternatives such as ethanol/hydrofuels instead of gasoline & why won't the government allow more options to the public
If none of these help, check out your local paper and see if there's anything there that sparks a topic.
Good luck!

I think you answered the question for yourself ! Your professor wants something "original". So make your paper about originality.
How ?
Research 2 or 3 people that created something original or started a craze or a fad... discuss why their ideas were original. Regardless of how successful their products or ideas were... was it original ?
Hope that helps... Could be interesting.

How about gifted and talented education? Believe it or not, in some school systems its a secret. They don't want the students who aren't gifted and talented to feel bad so they make the program a secret. Teachers nominate students to join the program. How many brilliant students are not doing well in school because they're bored but yet not introduced to the more challenging material available to the gifted and talented group?

Secondary languages mandatory in difficulty-free/center colleges. Branching off of that, they are literally thinking the acceptance of Ebonics as some thing to benefit in colleges. ought to there be "In God We have self belief" on money at the same time as eliminating God from the court docket abode? ought to there be condom machines on co-ed college campuses contained in the dorms (as against requiring them to expire and purchase them). Evolution v creation.
