coz if we say PI Number...people usually think 3.1416.....besides, people love to repeat themselves, themselves.

Personal Identification Number is more than a mouthful and our society likes convenience and saying PIN is more convenient

Same reason why they say ATM machine. The "M" in ATM stands for machine already. So everyone's really saying Automated Teller Machine Machine.
