The theory most accepted right now is the nebular theory.
Basically, the sun formed from a rotating cloud of dust and gas, and as it collapsed under its own gravity some of the cloud was left behind and collapsed into smaller boulders and clumps. Those clumps came together under gravity and random movement, creating bigger clumps until most of the little bits were either collected together or kicked out of the solar system.
The earth was one of those clumps that formed.

There are two possible ways: sporatic chance (such as the Big Bang) or by design. The second is call Intelligent Design (which may or may not include God as the Creator). The second seemed more logical to me by way of an all-powerful God which lives outside of time and human dimension that we must have faith to understand that He has always existed (though man cannot fully comprehend it or prove it by just material proof, because He is not made of material).

Billions of years ago a 20 solar mass star blew up in a super nova.
The debris ejected from the explosion crashed into the hydrogen field that formed the giant star and resulted in a maelstrom that became our solar system and us.
