pads - less chance for toxemia poisoning.

Many women get advance warning before their period begins - a crampy feeling in the stomach or lower back, feeling bloated etc. And with any luck you'll find that your cycles, once started, are so regular that you can predict when your period will start. I'd suggest a black swimsuit if that's an option - in the unlikely event that your period starts while you're swimming it will help disguise it - no stain will be visible. Tampons are a good choice but make sure you follow the directions carefully (washing hands, changing them regularly, not inserting a tampon before your period has actually begun etc). As far as the string popping out, it shouldn't as long as your swimsuit is a reasonably neat fit.

Honey, NONE of us like our periods!
I hate pads. It's gross to feel it against your body. I prefer tampons and if needed (usually the first day is heavier and seems to completely by-pass the tampon) I will us a very thin panty liner along with the tampon.
ADDED...I use tampons, but in the defense of those concerned with Toxic Shock Syndrome, one of my son's friends at school just lost her mom to TSS. It was a 3 year long battle ending up with her in a full time nursing facility almost a vegetable for the last year of her life. The woman was 42 when she passed away.

Tampons tampons tampons! and if you don't think they are comfortable, it's because you haven't figured out how to put them in. Relax, it's completely normal, and don't be afraid it's going to go too far in, those applicators are not long enough to push them too far in, and the further it's in, the less you will notice it.. A good tampon (I use tampax pearls) and four midol and I forget I'm even on my period. BTW, I also wear a very thin panty liner just in case on the heavier days. You won't get TSS if you change your tampon every 4-6 hours, and it is good to wear a thin overnight pad to bed to let your vagina get moist again, because soaking up all the moisture in there is what causes TSS. if you're uncomfortable with tampons, start with lights and just change them more frequently on the heavy days.

It's all personal choice. If you are old enough to go on birth control you might look into the one with only 4 periods a year. Nobody likes their period.
I'm a pad person, I have an issue with tampons. I think most girls probably like tampons. Maybe I'm wrong.

Both... Tampons during the day and pads at night. Don't really understand the question!

Pads are safer and there is like no risk of infection. Tampons seem weird to me. I say pads because of the risks involved in using tompons.
Hope I could help

Neither...I use a menstrual cup. It's reusable, doesn't leak, and doesn't have to be changed as often as a tampon (some women can go as long as 12 hours!). Oh, and it's safe to use it even when you're not on your period (I mean when you're expecting it, but it hasn't come just yet).
