Obesity is much more complex than this either or question. There are emotional aspects for many heavy people. That said weight gain is caused by consuming more calories than you burn. Genetics determine how and where you store the excess energy known as fat. Some heavy people could eat the same amount as a thin person but still gain weight. Take a group like Pacific Islanders. They went out to sea to colonize distant islands. Perhaps those with slower metabolisms survived weeks on a boat without food. Making them the ones that produced the next generation. After enough generations you would have a large people that were heavy on a normal diet but still healthy and quite POWERFUL>

yes and no. depends on the individual.

i don't think the obesity epidemic that's rampant today is due to genetics. i think it's due to too much junk food and not enough exercise.

when i drive home from work, i pass two high schools letting kids out and i am so perplexed at how many fat kids i see. when i was in school in the 70's and 80's, there was maybe a handful of obese kids in the whole school. now it seems that every third kid is obese. it can't be caused by genetics.

There have been a lot of discoveries lately regarding this and there are NUMEROUS reasons for obesity.
I was a vegetarian, who spent a lot of time in the hospital for not eating enough, ran atleast 8 miles a day, worked out for several hours in addition to that. My weight topped off at 240. I had to have serious surgery to correct my weight problem and still have to be vigilant. I have had problems since then and come to find out I wasn't eating enough. I had to increase my calories and the weight came back off.
I know of several others like me. I think some of it is genetics, some of it stress, some depression and sure some from eating.
HOWEVER, over eating, WILL not make a person gain to the point of being bedridden. There is always a reason.
If a skinny person can eat nonstop and never gain, why wouldn't the opposite be true??

Many are obese due to genetics, while others were fed too much as little children--and the habit stayed with them. So it could be nature or nuture.

I didn't mention the thyroid gland. This is in your throat, and can make people become very overweight, very underweight, and/or very nervous.

I think that the majority of obese people cannot help it. The rest have just gotten addicted to fast-foods, fried foods, junk foods, fatty foods, etc.

i think that it is 20 percent genetics. also, u tend to follow the eating and excersizing styles of your parents. after you become obese, though, it is hard to stop eating because to many of this ceratain kind of hormones are produced and sent to your brain which is always telling you that you are hungry, and not enough of the hormones are produced to tell you tyhat you are full, so therefore, it is hard to stop eating since you are never full. the best way to overcome this is to rid your house of junk food and eat healthy food and start exersizing at leat 3 times a weak for 45 minutes, but try to go for more than that.

I believe obesity is due to lack of self control when it comes to eating. Not knowing when to stop! It maybe genetic as well, if members of a persons family ate without watching what they have eaten and began to put on tons of weight. I think in that instant, it is genetic.

But let's keep it real...you are what you eat!

It is more to do with environment, and emotions.

In that regard one may not be able to help their situation. A child for example cannot help the food that is served to him or her. If it is unhealthy, they will become unhealthy.

As far as emotions go, until a person can get help to stop eating their feelings, they will continue to do.

Obesity has nothing to do with genetics! just like if someones father and mother are body builders and very strong just because they are strong does not mean that their child is going to be strong. It has to do with the lifestyle they are living. Because obese parents most likely do not eat well and do not exercise their child will probably eat what they eat and be lazy like they are. Now with a child whose parents are body builders he will probably grow up eating healthy and being active.

It depends on what you are eating. It could be both or if you are eating alot the it is probally that. Genetics will have some to do with it but people can change that, their parents can be obease and the child will not be
