I don't see them as being in direct competition. I go to Rotten Tomatoes when I want to get an overall snapshot of what critics are saying about a movie to help me decide if I want to see it in theaters or wait till it comes out on DVD. Rotten Tomatoes is also great after I see a movie to help me see if I agree with what critics are saying.
The IMDB is my go-to site for movie trivia. All the whats, who's, when's, upcoming projects, etc. IMDB is like the ultimate encyclopedia of film facts and actor/director resumes.
Both resources are great for their particular realm of info, so I'd say I value them both equally.

Although Rotten Tomatoes has excellent coverage of recent movies, plus available photos, trailers, reviews & etc., IMDB's resources are far more widespread, since they cover nearly every movie you can think of, international as well as domestic, give full cast and credits when available, and include short films, telemovies, documentaries, pretty much anything on film---it also has comprehensive biographies and filmographies of actores and actresses---it's a terrific site---and the one I check first of the two.

i like IMDB because rotten tomatoes is way too negative.
if you look up movie reviews, all the reviews are ludacris. they are just written by grumpy old men that are mad they ended up rating instead of producing.

i prefer imdb when i'm trying to figure out who starred in which film or when a film came out. imdb is also good for trivia questions. i prefer rotten for movie reviews though i prefer metacritic.com in that department.

if you want to know if a movie is good or bad go to rottentomatoes, if you want info about the movie (plot, actors, director, nods) go to imdb.
