Astronomers classify suns basically by how hot the are. The classifications from hottest to coolest are O, B, A, F, G, K, M. You can remember this by the mnemonic: Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me. Kind of corny but it helps.

The brightest stars are the hottest O stars which are blue-white, like Sirius. The coolest stars are classified M and are red. Our sun is classified as G and is yellow.

Sirius is an A type star, which is considered white, although it looks a little blue compared to our sun.

The coolest stars are red, because red hot is the coolest glowing color, with white hot being hotter and blue hot being even hotter still!.

The Sun is type G, usually considered yellow. But it sure looks white to me!
