I kno wat polar and nonpolar bonds are, but what r the compounds. Plz make your answer clear if u want your answer to be chosen as Best answer....i have midterms tommorow ..plz help

when you look at the geometry of a compound with polar bonds, the bonds can either cancel each other out, due to symetry of the direction they are going, or they can and up to an overall dipole. The overall dipole is what makes a compound polar.

This depends on electronegativities. Since each atom attracts electrons differently (because of electron orbitals), positive and negative charges tend to group in a molecule. A polar molecule (H2O) has a large difference between the positive and negitive groups. A non-polar molecule is just the opposite (CCl4).

electron affinity is 2.1 for hydrogen and 3.5 for oxygen
3.5-2.1 = 1.4 which is in fact polar since the difference of electron affinities is greater than .4 but less than 1.9
which means it is polar covalent
for the compounds, there are tons, just learn how to apply electron affinities, it is all just periodic trends and electron affinity, look it up in google,
if you know the electron affinities, for lithium, beryllium, B,C,N,O,F you should be able to predict fairly accuralty most polar and non polar compounds

but if you really do not have ay time.
If the elements are far away on periodic table, (left to right) bet that they are polar
if they close, maybe not

with that you can determine, polarity of compounds by drawing molecular geometries

and screw the ten points
