ok i've been playing softball for 7 years, and i grew up in the dirt. i'm a freshman in highschool, and this is my first year trying out for jv, and i am petrified. i left off last season in a batting slump, and i never quite "got my groove back", and that was nearly 6 months ago.

i have just under one month before try-outs, and i need to train badly. i have no clue what my mile is as of now, but i ran a half mile yesterday in 4&1/2 minutes, so i need some work on getting to that mile. i want/need to lose 10 pounds for try-outs [i'm currently 5'1, 150 lbs]
does anybody else know of some drills i can do, and what else i need to do to train before i try out? i play outfield and 2nd base by the way.

You need to start a conditioning program. 10lbs can be lost in a month and you don't have to starve to do it. Lots of Chicken, Egg Whites, And Whey protein shakes. Basically, High protein and low fat.

You now need to start running. You can start light and build up. This will strengthen your legs. If you have access to a gym use a treadmill or elliptical machine. Build up to 30-40 minutes a day. This will strengthen your legs and burn fat.

Start doing Jobe exercises, these will strengthen the shoulders and rotator cuff. This will help build arm strength. Jobe exercise and actually throwing long toss is the best way to strengthen your arm. Play catch with a friend or throw at a target. build up to around 100-150 feet apart. You may be in a batting slump but let the coach see some speed and a cannon for an arm and you'll find a spot on the roster.

As far as hitting. You need to practice. Swing a broom stick in front of a mirror. Make sure your stance is comfortable, hands back and follow through with your hips. The hips is where the power lies. Have a friend or family member toss rolled socks in from the side work on your swing. Go to a local batting cage if one is in your area. Contact your coach and see if there are any hitting clinics in the area.

There are tons of drills on the web as well. It's hard work but it pays off. Good luck.

Do some stuff to sharpen your hand-eye cordination. It does not hurt hitting off of a tee, that is the best thing you can do for your hitting as long as there is a purpose behind it. Also get your friend, dad, brother, someone to hit you flyballs and groudballs so you can get back into the feeling of all of that.

If you want to train on one area or another pay close attention to your core (abs) for all the twisting and turning that goes into the game, and also pay attention to your arm... Play catch, and get that arm ready to go for the big day.

No matter what you do, make sure there is a purpose behind it... dont just be doing it to do it...

Best of luck...

If you want to work on keeping ur eye on the ball when batting, try doing a soft toss while using whiffle golf balls (have holes in them). it helps tremendously 4 when ur up 2 bat! ive been doing this drill for about a yr and its improved my batting average drastically. so good luck!
