Gay really means happy. What got this started?

Ok, here's the actual answer. So, back in pre-War United States homosexuals were around just like they are now. However back then they didn't have the lambda's, triangles or rainbows to say "Hey, I'm homosexual". Also it was much more stigmatized back then.

So instead of say "I'm going to a homosexual party, you should come too." You'd say "I'm going to this 'gay' party tonight" with inneundo mixed in.

It's an oversimplified explanation, but you get the point. That's why gay means homosexual instead of just joyful.

I don't know how it started but at one point in the mid-1900's homosexuals were, discretely call "happy". What's another word for happy? Gay, which was used frequently during that time.

I just thing the word "gay" was choosen instead of "happy".

Just think homosexuals were one word away from being "happy" today. Can you imagine the "Happy" Pride Parades? Or Happy Rights Movements?

Good Luck,

gay initially meant chuffed (i'm attempting to take that definition lower back, no longer determining properly) it become utilized in the route of adult adult males because the stereotypical gay male is "fruity" or happier... Lesbian comes from the Greek Lesbos which become an island (real) of all women folk who had sex with one yet another (delusion, although there turned right into a poem in which a women folk there (lesbian) coined the time period)
