Today, I went to the dr. and she checked my cervix for the first time (those exams are so uncomfortable!!) and I am 3 cms and 70% effaced. She told me that she still doesn't think I will have the baby for another week or so, but she could be wrong. She said with first time moms it is normal for them to be later than the due date, but at the same time she said I was the only patient that she saw today, that was more than 1 cm dilated with their first baby.

What do you think? Do you think I'll have it some time soon?

I know it depends on the baby and the person, but isn't 3 cms a lot for a first exam? I just hit 39 weeks today. I really want to have the baby before the end of January, and I think I will have her this week or beginning of next, but I haven't been getting any contractions. The only thing I get that I can feel, a little pains in my canal that feel like slight pressure, and every now and then a pinch of pain. And it lasts for about 10-20 secs and goes away.

How can I tell if I'm having any contractions at all because I can't feel a thing? I'm afraid that I'll have contractions, not know it, and have the baby in my bathroom or in the car...I have a high tolerance for pain.

What signs other than contractions and my water breaking can I look for?

I have been moving around a lot today, washing baby clothes and putting stuff in boxes. And when I sit down the only thing I can feel is her normal movement. But every now and then on my left side I get slight pressure on my side, where that muscle is that holds the uterus up...but it doesn't hurt, just feels funny for a few secs. I have been getting that feeling for the past week though.

I went in to my see my doctor at 39 weeks for my first child and I was 3cm dilated and the doctor said I probably still had another week. Well three days after that I go into labor and had my daughter. But women could stay 3cms for a week or more. I was never told how contractions felt but I knew what they were once I got them, I was having cramping every 10 minutes then it was every five minutes and that is when I decided to call the doctor and was told to come in. some people say they have pain in their lower back, but I didn't get this. Just be aware of your body, with cramping, water breaking, and/or lower back pain.

Trust me, having had three children of my own, you will know if you are having contractions. There is no denying it. As far as going into labor it really is entirely up to the baby. Usually if this does'nt happen by a week after your due date, the doctor will enduce labor. It is true that first time moms do go over their due dates. I have known this to happen to many friends and aquantances including myself. Just because you're dialated does not mean that you will go into labor any sooner. I'm sure you will have the baby soon enough. Just relax, try not to be anxious. I know it's easier said than done. But believe me it's for the best. Anxiety just makes things worse. It is normal to feel the little pains and pressures that you are having. If all else fails, my doctor suggested going home and making love. The contractions of orgasm often tend to bring on labor. It is perfectly safe. Good luck and God bless.

If you are having a contraction your uterus will get hard like a rock! Poke your forehead...yes, I'm serious. If your uterus fells that hard, esp. at the top, and then goes soft, you were having a contraction. The less fat you have over your abdominal area the easier it is to feel. But she's right! I've seen moms walk around for weeks at 3cm's. Good luck on a healthy delivery!

Everyone's bodies are different. You'll have to develop and follow your own intuition. You'll know when the "real" contractions come. And you'll know if your water is leaking or broken. You will never be able to stay dry down there either way. Go to www.babycenter.com to learn some quick things. Good Luck and Congrats!

My first son was a week early and I was only 1cm dilated at exam.
I think you will deliver before the end of the month. You can look for spotting and back pains.

With my 1st child I was 4 cm and 90% for 17 days! It depends on you, the child and ultimately God.

Congratulations! Good luck with the baby. My prayers are with you for a healthy and uncomplicated birth.

Seriously, relax! When the time comes, you will KNOW. Until then, try to enjoy these last pregnancy moments. A month from now, you will think "man, my life was easy back in January!"
