Australia is a continent and Oceania are the surrounding land masses included in that continent. I have often wondered myself how islands and other small land masses fit into the seven continents and why some are not considered continents.

Australia is the continent. Oceania is the tectonic plate that austrailia and many south pacific islands are attached to, but since the islands do not form a single large land mass, they are not considered to be part of the seven continents, just as New Zeeland, Madagascar, England, Cuba, etc. are not part of the seven continents.

australia is a continent and the country
oceania is a continent but not as a masive land but as a sum up of all islands in the pacific ocean. there are 7 cont. Asia, Africa,Australia,America,Antarctica,Europe and Oceania.

they can be called both. alot of america calls it austrailia but some other places call it oceania. its both! so it doesnt matter what you call it
