Okay, so we know how much the two equal together.

12

And we know the the pen (x) costs 3 times more than the book (x)

So, if the pen is 3 times more it becomes 3(x) while the book stays x

3(x)+x=12

We add the two together because that will form our total. Now to figure out the equation. We can add our (x)s together because they are alike variables

3x+x= 4x

So, now 4x=12

To get x, we have to divide by four, because that's how many xs we have

4x/4=x (By dividing, we isolated the variable, x)

12/4=3 (We have to do the same thing to each sides)

x=3 (x=3 is the simplified equation)

Plug it in!

We know now that x equalls 3 and that x by itself was the book. Maria's book is $3

We also know that the pen was 3 times as much. 3(3) = 9. Maria's pen is $9

If you want to prove it, plug your numbers back in.

3(3)+3=12
9+3=12
12=12

So, our answer was right. Hope this helped. :)

this is an easy algebra question:
3x+x=12
4x=12
x=3
therefore the pen costs 9 dollars and the book costs 3 dollars.
and 9 is 3 times 3.
Maria must have been stupid to purchase a pen worth more than a book,
