First, Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and should not be introduced to one another unless you plan on breeding them. (Never house Syrians together!) You will quickly notice as they get older that they will begin fighting whenever you put them in the playpen together. They are territorial animals and will not share their territory. Forcing them to do so is against their nature. I suggest that you put the female in by herself first and when she's done, put the male it. He will have fun smelling her scent on all the toys.

The behavior you observed your female doing is the mating stance. This is often referred to as "freezing". The females will lower their body and raise their tail and back end into the air giving the male a better chance of a successful "mount". Female hamsters go into heat every 4-5 days. If he mounted her and successfully bred her, you can expect babies in 16 days. When a female in heat is introduced to a male, the male will first begin by smelling her and then licking her bottom area. Then he will mount her. I don't want to get too graphic but the first few mountings usually don't produce pups. This is why males will mount females over and over again until he is exhausted or the female rejects him.
