I am working with my child on a science cross word puzzle about the structure of the earth.

Lava.
If I remember correct some Islands are formed from the Lava. Hawaii is an example I think, not sure, been a while I studied this stuff.

Hot liquid rock is called magma when it is below the surface, and lava when it is above the surface of the earth. The type of rock it eventually becomes is determined by the type of magma and whether the cooling process took place inside or outside the earth's surface.
