I have a 97 Grand Am GT with 118,000 miles on it. The current problem with it is it is leaking coolant into to the engine. My mechanic has told me that this was most likely caused from a worn out head gasket. As a result of the problem 1 possible 2 of the cylinders are not firing. It currently runs, but won't for long. I want to get rid of it and fast, but wanted to know what ways i could do that and hopefully still get some money out of it. I know I could sell it to a junkyard, but not really sure how much that would bring. Thought mabye there was a better alternative. O and I'm not going to use it on a trade in cause I have my eye on a private sale. Any help would be very much appreciated.
-Thank You!

By alternatives i mean are there businesses that buy cars that are at the end of their life and scrap the good parts...I guess like a legal "chop shop". And if so how much might that bring or how much would the salvage yard give me. The car is nice in every other aspect but that.

Most likely just intake gaskets. It is very common on GM V6s.

yes you could have a blown head gasket or you could have a bad intake gasket. If you want ,fix it yourself, every thing is in books, if it works out you feel good. If it dont its already broke anyway that is the way you gotta look at it, and plus you learned something. Then call the junk yard or part it out. Your not going to get a heap of money anyway so do it right...

Advertise the car on Ebay, that way you will get to as many prospective buyers as possible.

You can either sell the whole car as is, or advertise seperate parts or the car, eg the seats, steering wheel etc.

Im sure there are heaps of people out there who need spare parts for their 97 Grand Am.

if you sell it to a junk or scrap yard you'll probably only get about 60 to 80 dollars a ton. Which means that you would only get about one hundred dollars. I would put it up for sale and try to get as much out of it as I could from an individual.

Get a chilton's manual and change the gasket yourself on a weekend. It would, at least, raise the resell value.

this is why you dont buy american cars from the 90s. the car only lasted 120k miles. thats absurdly short.

best bet is to sell it to someone that doesnt know wtf theyre doing for a pretty low price.

would give a dead dog to a friend,,,,,,,,don't give your problem to someone else,,,they might take it personal,,,,,I myself don't get even,,,goes around comes around,,,junk it,,,that's the safest thing for you!!!!!!!!!
