There would be 4 cylinders in that engine. The L4 means a In-Line 4. And most cylinders have 2 valves. And intake and an exhaust. If you divide 16 by 4 what do ya get.

Probably 4 because its L4 i think it may be 4 cylinders put beside eachother to look like an L.

the "L4" designation tells you that it is an in-line 4 cylinder engine.
"In-line" just means that the cylinders are all in a row, rather than in a "V" design.

Counting spark plugs doesn't always work. A four cylinder Ford Ranger has eight spark plugs, two for each cylinder.

Best way of knowing how to check how many cylinders you have is counting your spark plugs. That Geo of yours is a 4 cylnder vehicle.
