Yes because of over population in the country they have limited the birth rate to 1 per couple. If a woman becomes pregnant a second time it is aborted.

Yes, it's true. This is easily verifiable if you do some word search in the net. I'm sorry I can't do it for you now.
My classmate in the university, a woman from a suburb of Shanghai, China, told us in class that the policy remains in force, and most stringently executed in the cities and large towns. For many years, the one-child policy was just as strictly applied in rural areas, even if agriculture tends to be labor-intensive and despite the lower population densities in these areas. Missing mothers, suspected of being pregnant, were hunted down, and if found pregnant, forced to have an abortion. As a result, the population growth rate per year in China has dramatically plunged to a little more than 1%.
Further, the government has had to grapple with the sociological phenomenon of the "little emperors" in the family. Imagine a child, the only one of his or her parents, who might even be the lone grandchild of grandparents of both sides. That child is prone to be spoiled thoroughly, and develops personality problems.
However, there are projections that unless China reverses the policy, it would see its population decline markedly in 50 years. Social welfare and an aging population would be problems too in the forseeable future.
That's what you get when government interferes coercively in the decision of couples how many children they want to have. How would you like that in your own country?

China's population control policy. The Chinese government has used several methods to control population growth. In 1979, China started the "one child per family policy" (Juali Li 563). This policy stated that citizens must obtain a birth certificate before the birth of their children. The citizens would be offered special benefits if they agreed to have only one child. Citizens who did have more than one child would either be taxed an amount up to fifty percent of their income, or punished by loss of employment or other benefits (Hilali 10). Furthermore, unplanned pregnancies or pregnancies without the proper authorization would need to be terminated (Hilali 9). In 1980, the birth-quota system was established to monitor population growth(Jiali Li 563). Under this system, the government set target goals for each region. Local officials were mainly held responsible for making sure that population growth totals did not exceed target goals. If target goals were not met, the local officials were punished by law or by loss of privileges.

Yes, but they may try for a second child if the first one is a girl. After the second child is born, they must stop. Boys are highly prized in their society, so the couple's want a boy, and not a girl. If the second child is a girl, it has been found that this baby is sometimes killed so as to allow the couple to try again.

It was back in the 1980's where the government was enforcing this policy. You didn't have to have just one, but they would pressure you to the point that you would have to.
Boys, in their culture, are to pass on the family wealth, so lots of first born baby girls by the hundreds of thousands were drowned or simply aborted over time.
It's not as bad as it was then because their economy is picking up, but they still have the very poor versus the few very rich... So, they still try to keep their population down by continuing advertising campaigns that one child for one family is a good thing.

Yes it is true....reason is that they didn't want the population to grow like the USA. I guess the more people they have the more it would destroys their environment as such building more houses and schools. China are very concern to their environment and the landscape surrounding them. I don't really know more information about it, but you can look up in the website on China that might be helpful!

Yes, but there are exceptions to this rule. If you are rich, you can simply pay a hefty one-time penalty to the government for each additional child. Also, if a Chinese person is married to a foreigner, the rule does not apply. Finally, if you are Chinese but from an ethnic minority, you are allowed one to two additional children depending on which minority group you are from.
I know, I live in China.

Yes. If you have more there are fines/penalties but there are only a couple loop-holes like having twins, I think or being a very important political person (that is just the way it is over there).
Males are prefered, so, that is why chinese often have an abortion if it is a girl because they often ony have one.
