I'm guilty of this, but a lot of people assume that because I have homosexual friends that it makes me gay too. I want to be recognized as a straight male.

Gay men/women do this when straight people hit on them.

If a homosexual were to go to a straight bar and someone came up to talk, wouldn't he or she state that they were homosexual as well? Maybe not first thing, but at some point in the early conversation. Alot of people go to the bar/club to meet people. Granted some of these heterosexuals are possibly being guarded, but I'm sure most of them just want to get it out there that they're not here to pick anyone up.

Because they feel comfortable to be in a gay bar, to mention your straight is what some do to make sure no one comes on to them. I've been to many gay bars and I'm straight, most of my friends are gay, actually got hit on at a gay bar, by someone of the opposite sex.

Either: they aren't as comfortable with gay people as they think they are (or else they'd be able to turn down any interest the same way they would with someone of the opposite sex) or else they're only IN said bar as a novelty. Come check out the freak show at the local gay bar, and gush about it with your friends. You can be the first kid in your block to have ACTUALLY stepped inside such an exotic location!

A "no thanks I"m straight" when approached is one thing (still unnecessary, but understandable; a "no thanks" by itself would sufice), but constant "reminders", or making it a part of every introduction to each new person you meet is frankly assinine.

Maybe they don't want other folks to waste their time on them.

Maybe they feel a bit uncomfortable in this environment, for being in a gay bar might be a new and intimidating experience for them...

I wish I knew better but I can only guess and your guesses are as good as mines.

Best wishes to you and yours

They want it made perfectly clear to everyone that they themselves are not gay. They don't want someone labeling them as gay when they are not. And quite frankly, that probably is a result of ingrained homophobia on their part.

I used to go to a gay bar because they had a great pool tournament. If someone asked me out, I just said no thanks. Orientation was not an issue.

Maybe they just want to see thier "gay friends" happy and dont want them to think that they find gay people uncofortable?

Probably the same reason why a White person will say, "I know a lot of Black people...why, one of my friends happens to be Black!"

...people are people...

They are terrified that some guy is going to hit on them.
