Students in Portugal have to take 7 years of a 2nd language. Usually either French or English. Most take English. I have family in Portugal and they tend to speak English pretty well.

First of all, the Portuguese do not hate the Spanish. Case closed.

Apart from that, English is widely spoken (not as in some places as, say, Greece - I lived in Athens and everytime I tried to speak in Greek they would anser back in English) and maybe some French too. Since there are similarities between Portuguese and Spanish, the Portuguese will understand you if you speak Spanish. But they don't really speak Spanish, they just think they do.
