he spotted decay in the lining of the chimmey.. he installed astainless stell exhoaust tube and reconnected the boiler etc. the cost was $850.00 , is this too high. I live in the new york area.

actually its a cheap price, boiler vent pipe is expensive, its called b-vent its about the priciest pipe ive ever installed with the clamping system, and the fire rating, id say you got a great deal this stuff is just expensive

the best price i got for 6 "flex stainless steel liner in oregon last year was $25 per ft. I don't know how how long yours had to be. 20 ft = about $500. If he charged $50 per hour that he worked for 6 hours, that would be $800 . He probably had to go back to the shop for something or other in traffic, etc. there would be some fittings and labor making things work. He also probably had to dispose of something or other. The habor rate is based on upkeep and of apreciation of the vehicle and tools, also the secretary has to be paid and if there was a sales person, they get 10% +. Yeah I suppose that is about right.

No, the cost of stainless pipe is not cheap. The good thing is it will last for quite a while.

I had a chimney fire years ago that left the chimney unusable unless it was lined with s.s. flue. Believe me , you got a good deal.
