Yes and no. I've installed wainscoting from 32" to 60" depending on the look they wanted and the ceiling height. The 32" dimension allows a carpenter to cut a 4x8 sheet of wainscot paneling into 3 sections: 32" x 48". Thus, the 32" height utilizes the use of materials better. In essence, it's a matter of preference. For example, do you want to match the wainscoting to the height of your vanity? Good luck with your project.

Yes 32" is a standard height for wainscoting, but so is 24", 30", 36" and actually any height you desire. It really depends upon what the look is you desire. You could pick the height of something in the room like the top of the back splash or the bottom of the mirror and go with that line.

RE:
Is 32" the standard height for Wainscoting?
My wife wants wainscoting in our bathroom. Is that the standard length? What is the best way to buy it? I plan on staining it 1st before putting it up.

There is no standard height. Consider how you want it to look. We have wainscoting in one bathroom that is 54" H, another bathroom that is 42.5" H, and wainscoting in the kitchen that is 67" H. It's a function of what proportions look right in the room, and what works with cabinets, sinks, etc. You don't want the top of the wainscoting right at the top of a sink or right at the bottom of mirror, for example. You want things to "break" the line of the wainscoting in a way that's pleasing to the eye. Look in home magazines for examples to see what looks good.

There's no real standard, but 32" is the most efficient use of an 8 foot board.

I believe the height is 36", and you can buy it in sheets. Most people use a plywood veneer, but wainscoting can be individual, tongue and groove boards, too.

It can vary.
It all started out as a CHAIR RAIL that was nailed to the wall so a chair sliding back wouldn't damage the wall. Later, people started adding paneling to the area below the chair rail, and it became WAINSCOAT.

I just measured ours and it is 30" to the top.
I have no idea if that is standard.
